Biographical Sketch of John Murdoch

Born in Ardlach beside the Findhorn River in 1818
1821 to 1827 Lived at Bonskeid/ Fincastle as a child (Gaelic speaking at that time)
1827 on moved to Islay

1838 joined Excise - served in Armagh and Lancashire
1845 back to Islay

1845 also stayed in Dublin where he married Eliza Jane Tickell (but did not know her much)
1873 retired from the Excise and founded The Highlander
1881 in United States with Parnell promoting Irish Home Rule and land reform
1885 stood for parliament unsuccessfully at Partick under radical Land Restoration League
1887 took Davitt to Skye to stand for parliament
1888 chaired first meeting of Scottish Labour Party
1890's moved to Saltcoats, Ayrshire and died aged 85, buried in Ardrossan cemetery
